Your QBCC licence renewal is the one annual date that decides whether work like this can legally continue.

Quick answer

A QBCC licence renewal is the annual payment that keeps your licence active. QBCC sends a renewal notice one month before the due date, and you can pay online, by BPAY, over the phone, by mail, in person or by direct debit. Miss the date and your licence can be suspended, leaving three months to renew before cancellation and a further three months to apply for restoration.

A QBCC licence renewal looks like the simplest obligation in Queensland construction licensing: an invoice arrives, you pay it, the licence rolls over for another year. That is exactly why it catches people out. There is no assessment, no evidence pack and no interview, so it slips down the list behind live jobs, and the consequence of forgetting is far heavier than the size of the task suggests.

This guide covers when your renewal falls due and how the notice reaches you, every way you can pay, how the fees are calculated under the two-part structure introduced in 2026, the obligations that renewal does not discharge, and precisely what happens at each stage if the due date passes without payment.

1. What Is a QBCC Licence Renewal?

Renewal is a yearly administrative obligation, entirely separate from the application that got you licensed.

A QBCC licence renewal is the yearly payment that keeps an existing licence in force. It is an administrative step, not a reassessment: QBCC is not re-examining your qualifications or your experience, it is confirming that you still hold the licence and have paid to keep holding it for another twelve months.

Every contractor, nominee supervisor, site supervisor, occupational and company licence carries its own renewal date. If you hold more than one licence, or you hold an individual licence alongside a company licence, each one has its own cycle and its own fee.

If you are still working out which class you should be holding before you renew, the broader guide to QBCC Builder licences sets out how the three Builder tiers differ in scope and qualification.

  • ✓Renewal keeps an existing licence live. It does not upgrade, extend or change the class of work you are authorised to do.
  • ✓Each licence you hold renews separately, with its own due date and its own fee.
  • ✓Renewal is administrative. Compliance obligations such as annual financial reporting run on a completely different calendar.

Paying a renewal is not the same as being compliant

A licence can be fully paid up and still be in breach, because renewal and financial reporting are assessed separately. Treat them as two distinct deadlines, not one.

2. When Your Renewal Is Due and How the Notice Works

QBCC issues a renewal notice one month out, but the expiry date belongs to your licence, not to the notice.

There is no single state-wide renewal date. Your due date is tied to your own licence, which is why comparing notes with someone else in the same trade rarely helps. QBCC sends a licence renewal notice one month before the due date, and that notice carries the details you need to pay, including the BPAY biller code and your Customer Reference Number.

One month is a short runway if the notice goes to an address or an inbox you are not watching. Under the 2026 Tranche 3 reforms QBCC moved to email-first correspondence and tightened the window for updating your contact details, so a stale email address is now a genuine risk to your licence rather than a minor housekeeping issue.

It is also worth confirming the date you are working to is the right one. The expiry shown in the app and the date printed on a physical card do not always agree, a mismatch covered in detail in QBCC Digital Licence: why your phone and your card might not agree on when you expire.

  • ✓QBCC issues the renewal notice one month before the due date, by email under the current correspondence rules.
  • ✓The notice carries your BPAY biller code and Customer Reference Number, so keep it until payment clears.
  • ✓Once renewed, QBCC sends a confirmation letter, with a new licence card following roughly two weeks later.
  • ✓Check your registered email and postal address every year, ideally well before the renewal month.

The notice is a courtesy, the deadline is your responsibility

A renewal notice that never arrives does not extend your due date or excuse a late payment. The obligation sits with the licensee to know when the licence expires and to renew before it does.

3. How to Renew Your QBCC Licence

Person holding a credit card while paying online on a laptop at a wooden desk
Paying through the QBCC renewal portal or by BPAY is the fastest route and requires no form at all.

QBCC accepts renewal payments through six channels. Most take minutes, and the two fastest require no paperwork at all.

Method How it works Form required
Online portal Pay by credit or debit card through the QBCC licence renewal portal. The quickest option available. No
BPAY Pay through your online or mobile banking using the biller code and CRN printed on your renewal notice. No
Phone Call QBCC on 139 333 and pay by credit or debit card. No
Mail Post the renewal form with your credit or debit card details completed. Yes
In person Attend a QBCC service centre with photo identification and pay by Eftpos. Yes
Direct debit Set up a direct debit service in advance so the fee is drawn automatically each cycle. Yes, in advance

Direct debit is the option worth setting up if you have ever come close to missing a date, but it is the only method you cannot arrange at the last minute. QBCC needs the completed direct debit request form before your renewal falls due, and the service takes roughly a day to activate once received, so it has to be organised well ahead of the deadline rather than in the final week.

Pay first, sort the paperwork second

If a due date is imminent and a form is outstanding, paying by phone or online stops the clock while the documentation catches up. A licence lapses because payment was late, not because a form was posted late.

4. QBCC Licence Renewal Fees and the 2026 Change

Financial documents, tax forms and a calculator being handed across an office desk
Contractor renewal fees track your approved maximum revenue, so two licensees rarely pay the same amount.

What you pay depends on the licence you hold. Contractor licence fees are calculated from your approved maximum revenue, so a builder turning over $600,000 and a builder turning over $12 million pay very different amounts for the same licence class. Occupational, site supervisor and nominee supervisor licences are charged at a fixed rate instead.

Two things move that number from year to year. QBCC fees and charges increase on 1 July each year in line with legislative requirements, so the figure on your last notice is not a reliable guide to the next one. And from 1 February 2026, under Tranche 3 of the amending regulation, the old bundled amount was formally split into a licence application fee and a separate licence fee, itemised individually on your invoice.

The split matters because each component can now be waived on its own terms. Specific eligibility pathways attract a waiver of one or both fees, and eligibility follows the pathway your renewal falls under rather than your licence class, so two contractors in the same trade renewing in the same month can receive genuinely different invoices.

For the detail on which invoices changed and what to check before you pay, see QBCC’s New Two-Part Licence Fee: why your 2026 renewal bill just changed.

  • ✓Contractor licence renewal fees scale with your approved maximum revenue band.
  • ✓Occupational, site supervisor and nominee supervisor licences carry a fixed renewal fee.
  • ✓Fees and charges increase on 1 July each year, so budget on the current schedule rather than last year’s.
  • ✓Occupational plumbing and drainage licensees also pay an annual administration fee, charged once per financial year per licensee.
  • ✓Since 1 February 2026, invoices itemise the licence application fee and the licence fee separately.

Query a fee before you pay it, not after

If you believe a waiver applies and it has not been reflected on your invoice, raise it with QBCC in writing before payment and keep a copy of every fee determination. Recovering an overpayment afterwards is considerably harder than correcting the invoice up front.

5. What a Renewal Does Not Cover

A paid renewal keeps the licence alive administratively. It does not discharge your financial reporting obligations.

This is where most licensees come unstuck. Paying your renewal on time keeps the licence administratively alive, and nothing more. The obligations that most often lead to suspension sit outside the renewal process entirely and run on their own deadlines.

Annual financial reporting is the significant one. Under the Minimum Financial Requirements framework, companies holding a contractor licence must lodge annual financial reporting regardless of financial category, as must individuals with an approved maximum revenue above $800,000, that is, financial categories 1 to 7. The reporting demonstrates that you have not exceeded your maximum revenue by more than 10 per cent without telling QBCC, that you maintain a current ratio of at least 1:1, and that you can keep paying your subcontractors and suppliers.

Missing that lodgement is treated as a compliance failure in its own right, independent of whether the underlying financial position was sound. QBCC will typically write requesting the outstanding information first, then escalate through licence conditions or a reduction in your maximum revenue category, a show cause notice, suspension and ultimately cancellation.

  • ✓Annual financial reporting under MFR is a separate lodgement with its own reporting day and its own consequences.
  • ✓Continuing professional development obligations, where they apply to your licence, are tracked separately again.
  • ✓Changes of nominee, business structure or contact details must be notified to QBCC when they happen, not at renewal.
  • ✓Home warranty insurance obligations on individual jobs are unaffected by the state of your renewal.

Company licences add another layer, because the licence depends on a nominee supervisor remaining attached to it. How that arrangement works alongside an individual licence is set out on the QBCC Company & Nominee Licence page.

Renewal keeps what you hold, it does not defend it

A current, fully paid licence offers no protection if your financial reporting is outstanding or your nominee arrangement has lapsed. Those are the failures that actually suspend licences.

6. Late Renewal, Suspension, Cancellation and Restoration

Suspension stops everything: no new contracts, no quotes or tenders, and no finishing work already underway.

Missing the due date does not end your licence immediately, but it starts a sequence with hard limits at each step. Understanding where you sit on that timeline determines whether you are making a payment or preparing a fresh application.

Stage What it means Your window
Due date passes unpaid Your licence may be suspended. You cannot sign contracts, provide quotes or tenders, or complete building work already in progress. Act immediately
Within 3 months of expiry You can still renew by paying the outstanding renewal fee. 3 months from expiry
Licence cancelled for non-renewal After 3 months the licence is cancelled. You may apply to restore it by lodging the restoration form and paying both the outstanding renewal fee and a restoration fee. A further 3 months
Restoration granted If restored, the date of being licensed runs from the expired renewal date, so the record shows no gap. Backdated
Beyond the restoration window The licence cannot be restored. You must reapply and meet the licensing requirements current at that time. Full reapplication

The reapplication scenario is the one to avoid, and not only because of the cost and delay. A fresh application is assessed against the Technical Qualifications for Licensing document as it stands on the day you lodge, and qualifications that were accepted when you first became licensed may no longer be recognised. Builders who qualified years ago can find themselves needing additional units or a formal equivalency assessment simply because a renewal deadline slipped.

A licence cancelled or suspended for any reason other than failure to renew cannot be restored at all. That route exists only for late fees.

Continuing to work while suspended carries its own exposure, separate from the licensing consequence, as explained in Working Outside Your QBCC Licence Class.

Suspension stops work in progress, not just new work

The restriction is not limited to signing new contracts. It extends to finishing jobs already underway, which is what turns a missed payment into a problem for your clients, your subcontractors and your cash flow in the same week.

7. How QBCC Express Helps With Your Renewal

Close-up of two professionals shaking hands across a desk in an office meeting
Checking your renewal position before the due date costs far less than restoring a cancelled licence.

Most renewals need nothing more than a payment on time. The ones that go wrong usually involve a fee that was calculated on the wrong basis, a reporting obligation that was missed alongside the payment, or a licence that has already lapsed and now needs restoring under time pressure. QBCC Express helps licensees sort out which of those situations they are actually in.

Support area What it covers
Renewal readiness review Confirms your due date, licence classes and current contact details before the notice period opens.
Fee structure and waiver check Reviews your invoice against the two-part fee structure and identifies whether a waiver pathway applies to your renewal.
Annual reporting coordination Aligns your MFR annual financial reporting with your renewal cycle so the two obligations are not confused.
Nominee and company licence support Confirms your nominee arrangement remains valid so the company licence is not exposed at renewal.
Restoration and reapplication Manages restoration where a licence has been cancelled for non-renewal, or prepares a fresh application where the window has closed.

To keep an ongoing view of licence status across your own business and your subcontractors, QX Checker monitors licensing, business register and financial standing data continuously. If your renewal is already close or a licence has lapsed, book a free consultation and we will confirm exactly where you stand.

The cheapest renewal problem is the one you catch early

Confirming your due date, your fee basis and your reporting position takes a short conversation. Restoring a cancelled licence, or reapplying under current qualification rules, takes months.

8. FAQs

How often do I need to renew my QBCC licence?

Annually. Each licence you hold carries its own renewal date and its own fee, so an individual licence and a company licence renew separately even when they cover the same business.

When does QBCC send my renewal notice?

One month before the due date. The notice includes your BPAY biller code and Customer Reference Number, and under the current correspondence rules it is issued by email by default.

What happens if I do not pay my QBCC licence renewal on time?

Your licence may be suspended. While suspended you cannot sign contracts, provide quotes or tenders, or complete building work already in progress.

How long do I have to renew a lapsed QBCC licence?

Three months from the expiry date. After that the licence is cancelled, and you have a further three months in which you may be able to apply for restoration.

What does restoring a cancelled QBCC licence involve?

Lodging the restoration of licence form and paying both the outstanding renewal fee and an additional restoration fee. If restored, the date of being licensed runs from the expired renewal date.

Does renewing my licence satisfy my annual financial reporting obligation?

No. Renewal and MFR annual financial reporting are separate obligations with separate deadlines. A licence can be fully paid up while the licensee is non-compliant on reporting.

Why did my 2026 QBCC renewal invoice look different?

From 1 February 2026 the fee was formally split into a licence application fee and a separate licence fee under Tranche 3 of the amending regulation. Each component can be waived on its own terms depending on your eligibility pathway.
